Crane Services for Electric Zoo Festival NYC – Randall’s Island, New York City
Project Overview
Setting up one of New York City’s most iconic music festivals in a matter of days demands more than heavy equipment – it demands precision, synchronized teamwork, and zero margin for error.
Positive Lifting was trusted by Avant Gardner to provide full crane and rigging services for the Electric Zoo Festival, New York City’s largest music event, held annually on Randall’s Island. With over 20 years of history and tens of thousands of attendees each year, Electric Zoo is one of the most demanding live production projects in the city.
The scope of work included staging installation, staging erection, and structural installation – with individual staging sections reaching 150 feet in height and weighing up to 100,000 pounds. Delivering this level of crane hire in NYC, on a temporary outdoor site under a fixed event deadline, required expert planning, advanced rigging equipment, and a highly experienced team.
The Challenge: Heavy Lifts, Tight Deadlines, and a Complex Site on Randall’s Island
This project combined some of the most demanding conditions in NYC crane operations:
- Extreme structural weight – staging sections weighing up to 100,000 lbs, with multi-crane picks reaching 120,000 lbs
- Significant elevation – lifts performed at heights ranging from 100 to 200 feet
- Fixed launch date – zero tolerance for delays, with all installations required before opening day
- Restricted outdoor site – Randall’s Island presented limited access points and tight crane positioning constraints
- Multi-team coordination – crane and rigging operations had to run in parallel with multiple production and construction crews on site simultaneously
Because the festival had a non-negotiable launch date, every lift had to be executed correctly and on schedule – no second chances.
The Lifting Solution: 6 Cranes, 35 Professionals, Advanced Rigging
Positive Lifting mobilized a full-scale crane and rigging operation specifically configured for this project.
The equipment deployed included:- All-terrain mobile cranes ranging from 100 to 300 tons
- Crawler cranes of 100 and 200 tons
- 6 cranes operating across the site simultaneously
- Specialized spreader beams and spreader bars for high-load precision lifts
The team consisted of:
- 35 skilled professionals on site
- 6 master riggers overseeing all critical operations
- 4 riggers assigned per crane
A detailed lift plan was engineered in advance, sequencing each lift to align with the production schedule. This allowed all crane operations to proceed without blocking parallel staging and structural installation work on other areas of the site.
The combination of the right equipment, the right personnel, and structured planning allowed the entire installation to be completed ahead of schedule.
Execution & Safety: Tandem Lifts and Critical Picks at 200 Feet
The most technically complex elements of this project involved tandem and multi-crane lifts, where two to three cranes were operated in full synchronization to hoist a single 120,000-pound staging section. These critical picks were planned and executed by master riggers and structural engineers to ensure absolute precision at height.
Key execution and safety measures included:- Custom lift plans for each critical pick, reviewed by master riggers and engineers
- Full synchronization protocols for all tandem and multi-crane lifts
- Spreader beams and advanced rigging assemblies to distribute load safely at elevation
- Continuous communication between crane operators, rigging crews, and staging teams
- Controlled procedures for sensitive and high-value structural components
- Full compliance with New York City crane safety regulations and DOB standards
Every lift – from the first structural element to the final staging section – was executed with the precision required at this scale and height.
Result: Completed Ahead of Schedule
The Electric Zoo Festival setup was completed ahead of schedule, with all staging and structural infrastructure fully installed and operational before opening day. Avant Gardner, the festival’s production team, commended Positive Lifting’s execution and professionalism throughout the project.
This project demonstrates what’s possible when specialized crane services in New York City are backed by the right fleet, certified personnel, and engineering-level lift planning – on one of the most high-profile outdoor events in the city.
