Restoring a Historic Landmark

Positive Lifting is honored to have contributed to the restoration and revitalization of The Highland, a historic landmark originally known as the Empire Dairy Company in Brooklyn. Designed by Theobald Engelhardt and Otto Strack, this iconic building showcases Renaissance and Romanesque Revival styles, while also incorporating elements of Abstract Classicism and Secessionism.

Utilizing Our Crane Fleet for Structural Lifts

On this remarkable ground-up, 14-story structure, Positive Lifting had the privilege of utilizing the full capabilities and capacity of its crane fleet. We employed a range of mobile cranes, from 50-ton to 300-ton capacities, to install and erect all structural steel, efficiently handling both light and heavy lifts.

Advanced Rigging and Material Handling

In addition to our mobile cranes, we also provided knuckleboom crane services to deliver and lift essential materials for the building’s envelope. Positive Lifting’s advanced rigging methods were instrumental in the installation of heavy-duty materials and equipment, ensuring contractors could complete their work on time and within the project’s tight deadlines.

Preserving Architectural Heritage

We played a key role in the restoration process, particularly in the careful handling and installation of materials required to preserve the building’s unique architectural features, including the two stunning terracotta murals on its façade. These murals, depicting agrarian scenes, are believed to be the largest existing architectural installations created by the American Encaustic Tile Company and represent a vital piece of Brooklyn's artistic heritage.

Commitment to Safety and Preservation

Collaborating closely with preservationists and contractors, we ensured that all operations were executed with the utmost care and in full adherence to safety standards, preserving the integrity of this cherished landmark. Our efforts also supported the community’s successful advocacy for The Highland’s landmark designation, achieved in 2017, solidifying the building’s status as a significant part of Brooklyn’s architectural history.

Honoring the Past, Building the Future

At Positive Lifting, we remain dedicated to preserving the past while contributing to the future. Projects like The Highland exemplify our commitment to ensuring that historic landmarks receive the careful attention and expertise they deserve.
